A team with 4 Polito students wins the Infineon’s Makeathon [21/11/2022]

Every six months, Infineon Technologies organizes a competition to create a product in 24 hours; the product can be a software solution or an electronic prototype. During the latest edition, 37 teams joined the competition from multiple Infineon locations. We are proud to announce that in the winning team, four out of eight members are Polito students working under the supervision of Prof. Paolo Bernardi:
- Augusto Maria Guerriero (ex-M.S. student, now Infineon employee)
- Giorgio Insinga (Ph.D. student at DAUIN)
- Francesca Sanna (M.S. thesis student)
- Alessia Sena (M.S. thesis student)
The team developed a self-powered and ultra-low-power motion sensor; the energy to operate the device (around 1/2 mW) is harvested by a solar panel with office lamps as the only light source. This victory emphasizes, even more, the fruitful collaboration between Politecnico and Infineon.

Mobile app for seafood frauds detection advertised on national media [21/07/2015]

Francesco Rossi, a PhD student enrolled in the PhD programme in Computer and Control Engineering at Politecnico di Torino working in the SysBIO research group of the Department of Control and Computer Engineering developed a mobile app for tablets and smartphones named “Ok il pesce è giusto” aimed to protect citizens from food frauds.

The app, created in collaboration with the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Piemonte, Liguria e Valle d’Aosta and with the support of Compagnia di San Paolo, is specifically targeted to the seafood market, and is designed to match the picture of a product being purchased with a pictorial database of known references in order to inform the user about the actual product type and possible mismatches.

“Ok il pesce è giusto” has been presented at the Expo 2015 Agorà space in Turin, and advertised in a number of national newspapers and magazines, both printed and online [Link 1][Link 2]. On July 14 and 15, 2015, the app has appeared on regional and national TV channels of RAI, the public Italian broadcaster [Link 3][Link 4].

    ESA's S2UN challenge [11/02/2015]

Five students from the Doctoral School of the Politecnico di Torino (among which 3 from the PhD programme in Computer and Control Engineering, i.e., Giuseppe Airò Farulla, Francesco Brundu, Luigi Colangelo) participated to the international European "ESA's S2UN challenge" contest promoted by ESA and arrived to the final stage, ranking at the second place at the end of the competition.

The contest is designed to force interdisciplinary groups of young people to further put into practice their knowledge by working on a case study that will lead to the proposal of possible entrepreneurial exploitations from ESA patents in terrestrial applications.

Students from several different European universities participated to this contest. Politecnico’s students were accompanied by a specific training course held by Prof. Paolucci and Scellato. Managers from industry have also played the role of mentors to facilitate the assimilation of an approach similar to the one real companies have in terms of product and process innovation.

The student group has proposed PIER – Petroleum Innovative Environmental Remediation, a project aimed at the containment and recovery of polluting oil as a result of accidental spills at sea; this project leverages on ESA patent "A deployable tensegrity structure, especially for space application".
